Statement: Voter Participation Center and Center for Voter Information on Georgia Law Restricting Voting Access
Washington, DC, March 26, 2021 — Tom Lopach, President and CEO of the Voter Participation Center (VPC) and Center for Voter Information (CVI), released the following statement after Georgia lawmakers sent sweeping anti-voting legislation to the desk of Georgia Governor Brian Kemp. Since 2003, VPC and CVI have helped more than 5.7 million Americans register to vote and get to the polls.
“Georgia lawmakers have made it harder for citizens to vote. America is a democracy, and voting is core to who we are. Enacting these harmful voter suppression laws that target the New American Majority – people of color, young people, and unmarried women – is disgraceful and unwarranted. Elected leaders should pass legislation that will ensure every eligible voter has full access to participate in our democracy. Passage of this racially charged bill will only force us to redouble our efforts to register and empower eligible voters to participate in our democracy. Instead of building on last year’s policies that resulted in record turnout and election participation in the state, Georgia lawmakers have erected new draconian barriers to voting. It is time for the U.S. Senate to act and pass the “For the People Act,” which will bring comprehensive and structural democracy reform to our country and stop this thinly veiled assault on our voting rights.”
